A veteran New York police sergeant has been killed just nine months away from retirement in a car accident. A 16-year-old, who had just received his permit just three weeks prior, hit Sergeant Frank Gualdino, 53, in a BMW M5 on Thursday.

Sgt. Gualdino, a 24-year veteran, was on-duty and driving an unmarked 2012 Chevrolet Impala in Yonkers.

While in his patrol car, the 16-year-old lost control and slid into an oncoming lane, crashing into the Impala.

The BMW also collided with a Westchester County bus, and dashcam video from a car traveling in the same direction as the BMW showed it lose traction and spin into oncoming traffic.

The sergeant died in the collision, while the teenager was hospitalised in critical condition after the accident with extensive blunt force injuries.

The bus driver and several Westchester County Bee-Line passengers were also injured in the crash.

Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza described Sgt. Gualdino, who was due to retire in August, as a “cop’s cop”.

At a press conference on Friday morning, he said: “Frank was a great guy.

“He was a personal friend, he was an asset to this job, he was a credit to this job and he was a credit to the community.

“This is a tragic, tragic loss for us.”

Mayor Mike Spano also voiced commiserations, according to Fox 5, and said: “Our hearts are heavy as the City of Yonkers has experienced an insurmountable loss.”

The mayor added: “Sgt. Frank Gualdino was a cop’s cop and the epitome of Yonkers Finest.

“Yonkers is a close, tight-knit community, and when we lose one member of our law enforcement community, we all feel a sense of grief.

“Frank was someone we all know and loved.”

Mayor Spano also spoke of the teenage boy and tragedy for his family, and said: “We were all 16 once. We have teenagers in our families.”
