‘Very unpredictable!’ Drivers urged to check cars regularly to avoid accidents this autumn

With temperatures dropping and rainy weather approaching, drivers across the UK have been advised by a motoring expert to start preparing their cars. Anything that is not working right or shows signs of damage can lead to an accident if drivers are not careful.

Dorry Potter, car and scrappage expert at National Scrap Car, told Express.co.uk: “It is always advisable that motorists regularly check their car and its parts for anything that isn’t working right or shows signs of damage, as in a lot of cases these issues can lead to bigger problems or even an accident.

“Although some may think that it may be a bit too premature to conduct autumn and winter checks given the fact that temperatures are still in the 20s around the country, it is important to remember that the British weather is very unpredictable, let us not forget the snow in April this year! So, it is always good to be prepared.”

Ms Potter also advised drivers to carry out some simple checks before autumn and winter properly set in.

She said: “Check your wipers for damage, check your oil, inspect your tyres, check your headlights and brake lights, inspect your windscreen for any chips or cracks and be sure to have de-icer and a scraper handy.

However, if that’s the case, drivers should simply turn their engines off when their stuck in traffic.

According to the RAC, idling for even 10 seconds wastes more fuel and causes more emissions than simply restarting the car.

Changing the oil regularly

This is such a simple and yet easily forgotten maintenance task.

The engine oil is the fluid that lubricates, cleans and cools to prevent wear and damage to the car.

If left unchanged, it can cause the vehicle to run ineffectively, causing more emissions, and eventually breakdowns.

Motorists should check the specific oil maintenance needs of their vehicles and should make sure that they use the correct grade of oil.
