The man in charge of looking after the Queen’s health is Professor Sir Huw Thomas, Head of the Medical Household and Physician to the Queen.

Sir Huw has been Head of the Medical Household since 2014.

He was knighted last year after being invested with the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

Buckingham Palace announced today that the Queen, 96, who is known to have ongoing mobility issues, has been placed under medical supervision at Balmoral, adding that while she is “comfortable”, doctors are “concerned”.

Sir Huw has been involved in delivering some of the younger members of the Royal Family.

He was part of the team who looked after the Duchess of Cambridge when she gave birth to Princess Charlotte in 2015, and her youngest son Prince Louis in 2018 at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.

He was working alongside Guy Thorpe-Beeston, surgeon gynaecologist to the royal household, and consultant gynaecologist Alan Farthing, surgeon gynaecologist to the Queen.

Sir Huw also cared for the Duke of Edinburgh up until his death in April 2021 aged 99.

In an interview with Imperial College London, Professor Sir Huw said being physician to the Queen was a “great honour” and “a very enjoyable and rewarding role”.

He added: “The nature of the work is interesting because you see how a whole different organisation, the Royal Household, operates. You very much become part of that organisation and become the personal doctor to the principal people in it, who are patients just like other patients.”

After being made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in the New Year’s honours, the physician, who is also Professor of Gastrointestinal Genetics at Imperial College London’s Department of Surgery and Cancer, told Imperial of his work within the royal household: “It’s been a busy couple of years in this role, so I feel very grateful to have been recognised for my service to date.”

The Medical Household can also call in other specialists if necessary, and sometimes relies on facilities at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital when members of the Royal Family require further treatment.

“With the pandemic, the key priority of the Medical Household is trying to make sure that the people under its care are kept safe.”

Other members of the Medical Household include Serjeant Surgeon Satya Bhattacharya, an esteemed medic with more than 20 years’ experience as a consultant surgeon.

The Medical Household can also call in other specialists if necessary, and sometimes relies on facilities at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital when members of the Royal Family require further treatment.

The Queen, Princess Anne, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh are among those previously treated there in the past.

Sir Huw graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge and The London Hospital. He trained in gastroenterology and general medicine at The London, The Royal Free, St Mary’s and St Mark’s Hospitals in London.

He also undertook a PhD in the molecular genetics of colorectal cancer at The Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
