The most popular Christmas markets in Europe named – and it’s not Germany in the top spot

Christmas markets are popular attractions that can bring tourists from far and wide to a city. With many holidaymakers associating Christmas markets with Germany, does the country have the most popular market in Europe?

On Tripadvisor, Christina W said: “We travelled to Budapest, Vienna and Prague just for the Christmas Markets. This market was by far the best.

“Go at night to see the Christmas lights; they are unbelievable.

“There is plenty of food, great souvenirs to buy, and great desserts, but there are lines for everything.

“Do not miss this Christmas Market!”

Hansel S wrote: “It is a beautiful and magical place to walk around.”

Austria usually enjoys a white Christmas, the snow making the markets all the more popular.

DON’T MISS

In second place was Berlin.

The German city has 80 Christmas markets, so there is something for everyone.

The first Christmas market in the city took place in 1530 in Alt-Berlin, the Berliner locality of Mitte.

In third place was Strasbourg.

The French city located at the German border embraces all things Christmas.

Its first market was in 1570, the oldest Christmas market in France.

On Tripadvisor, Bergbahnn said: “If you are looking for a great Christmas Market experience go to Strasbourg!

“Follow the signs to the city centre and park in the underground lot in front of the train station. From there it is a short walk into the Old Town (on an island) which is a series of small markets which combine into a huge Christmas experience!

“Give yourself at least a half day or more to really enjoy it. Be aware that security concerns over the past few years have made it necessary to restrict the trams from stopping within the Old Town during the time the Christmas Market is operating, making it necessary to walk or take a cab.

“The food, drinks and sights are a lifelong memory and worth the effort!”
