The former top diplomat also warned the SNP that devolution could easily be revoked, as he poured more fuel on the flames of the controversy surrounding Scottish independence. Foreign policy matters are the preserve of Westminster, with the UK government running embassies around the world to promote its diplomatic agendas However, data released through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made last year showed the Scottish government spending almost six million pounds on seven overseas offices.

The FOI was made by the Daily Record media publication.

According to information provided by the FOI, Scotland has bases in Canada, China, America, France, Ireland, Germany and Belgium.

These include a £2.5million base in Brussels – the home of the European Union – which employs around 20 people.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Lord Frost criticised the SNP for going beyond its political jurisdiction and urged the UK government to act before it was too late.

He wrote: “We can begin by stopping mission creep.

“The devolved administrations do not have powers in foreign relations or immigration – they are ‘reserved matters.

“So why was the SNP able to control who came into the country during the pandemic on the basis of public health laws?

“Why are they spending taxpayers’ money on their own ’embassies’ overseas?

“If the UK Government does not police these boundaries, soon they will no longer exist.”

Ms Sturgeon promised voters prior to the 2014 independence referendum that Scotland would in the event of a “Yes” vote open about 100 embassies and consular offices around the world.

Lord Frost said that the bar for holding a referendum should be set much higher and be legally binding.

He argued: “Of course, any government would have to respect the settled will of an overwhelming majority in Scotland to govern themselves.

Douglas Chapman, an SNP MP, added: “An article in @telegraph by David “Frosty the NO man” Frost on saving the UK.

“An unelected Lord dictating to Scotland? I don’t think so.”

While Seamnus Mac fumed: “This is rich coming from an unelected bureaucrat representing a party rejected by Scotland for the last 67 years.

“No morals, no principles, and a wilful ignorance of democracy.

“Jock Frost is nothing but a typical cold hearted Tory Toom Tabard!”
