“I am confident,” Ferdinand said. “Not going to keep saying that, but I am confident that England are the team that other countries are looking at and saying we don’t really want to play them.

“These players have just filled me with confidence – this is the best England team I’ve seen in my lifetime. They’ve got a confidence and an aura that they’re building, I think they are [the best].”

Shearer echoed Ferdinand’s thoughts ahead of the clash on Saturday. “I agree,” he added. “As much as we’ll talk about [Kylian] Mbappe and [Antoine] Griezmann and what have you, can you imagine what they’re saying about our squad? Look at all the players that have performed and scored.”
