British armed forces have long identified Russia as a threat, even before the crisis in Ukraine.

Outgoing chief General Sir Nick Carter warned Russia was becoming increasingly dangerous in November 2021 and alleged the country’s leaders would use “all the instruments of national power to achieve their objectives”.

General Carter’s successor, General Sir Patrick Sanders, heeded those concerns when he likened the situation to the run-up to World War Two in 1937.
