Federer also confirmed that he would be at the sixth edition of the Laver Cup in Vancouver next year as he guaranteed a tennis appearance in 2023 despite no longer being an active player. “Looking forward to next year, I’ll be there too and support both teams from different position,” he added.

Turning his attention to the man he dedicated the tournament to, the former world No 1 continued: “And of course Rod Laver, thanks for always coming from far away places to come and be here. Your presence means everything to us, the players, so we can go cross-generation and inspire the next generation of players coming through and I hope you had a good time.”

Rounding off his speech, Federer said: “I hope I see you in Vancouver, thanks to all the organisation, all the sponsors, everybody. And you the fans, you made my weekend incredible, You know that.”
