Emergency services scrambled to Southwater in Sussex after a light aircraft crashed. Police and paramedics services were called to reports of a plane hitting trees and crash landing in an area near Reeds Lane at 2:35pm on Thursday.

Reports said the aircraft crashed at Jackrells Farm Airfield, south of Horsham.

The extent of the pilot and passengers injuries is not clear as of writing.

Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue are at the scene.

Fire engines from Horsham and Crawley, an off-road vehicle and heavy rescue equipment are being used.

The fire service is asking members of the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to work safely.

Sussex Police said: “Emergency services were called to a report of a light aircraft hitting trees and crash landing in an area near Reeds Lane, Southwater, at 2.35pm on Thursday 6 October.

“They are currently on scene and dealing with the incident. No further details are available at this stage.”

Chris Ashpole, who saw emergency services surrounding the scene on his way back from work, told ITV News: “I went past the field and saw a helicopter and number of police cars and ambulances.

“I went home and wondered what the commotion was. My daughter said it might have been some kind of plane crash.

“I’ve got a friend who lives opposite us who has an airfield, so I was worried about him. I came up with the dog just to have a look.

“When I was here, the helicopter was taking off and I spoke to a chap who said two people had been quite badly injured.”
