Novak Djokovic progressed to the Astana Open quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-1 win over Botic van de Zandschulp on Thursday, The world No 7 has now won 13 matches in a row after dispatching the Dutchman in their first meeting, and will face recent US Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov next.
Djokovic earned his most dominant win of the season in the opening round of the Astana Open, dropping just two games to Cristian Garin on Wednesday. It meant he came into his first meeting with van de Zandschulp full of confidence, though the world No 34 proved a slightly more tricky opponent.
The fifth seed was able to break the 27-year-old in the sixth game of the match, with van de Zandschulp hitting his first double fault at the worst time to give Djokovic the break. But the Dutchman didn’t go away and set up a break-back point in the very next game with an impressive drop shot.
Djokovic still proved too much for van de Zandschulp as he failed to capitalise on his chance to get the break back and went on to lose the opener 6-3. The world No 7 took things to the next gear in the second set, breaking for a 2-1 lead.
