National Highways’ Twitter account for The Severn Bridges said at around 11am both the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M48 Severn Bridge are closed to all traffic. The traffic account said they believe this is the “first time” both motorway bridges have been closed at the same time.

National Highways said ahead of any closures: “If a closure of both bridges should be required then the diversion route will require traffic to use the M5, M50, A40 and A449 as an alternative route.”

They also announced the Orwell Bridge in Suffolk was closed in both directions.

In a Twitter post, they said: “For what we believe is the first time due to wind speeds both the #M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and #M48 Severn Bridge are closed to all traffic.

“Traffic Management teams are heading to site to initiate the closure of the M4. Please do not travel to the location.

“Given the closure of both bridges this account will not be monitored whilst we physically ensure all the required actions are undertaken.

“Further updates will be issued as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience and stay safe.”
