M1 traffic latest: Two lanes CLOSED as fuel spill sparks motorway chaos – FIVE MILE queues

Share post:

Two of three lanes are still closed on the busy motorway.

The closures are in operation between Junction 38 to Huddersfield, and Junction 37 to Barnsley.

National Highways stated that they are “arranging resources” to clear the spill.

However, they added the “incident is likely to be ongoing for some time”, with drivers told to expect 30 minute delays on approach.

The clean-up is expected to last throughout the morning.

National Highways added via Twitter: “Clean-up works will be ongoing throughout the morning.

“There’s now over 5 miles of congestion on approach so allow extra journey time.”

The extremely busy motorway gives commuters from Northampton, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds to London.

Today’s delays, first reported by National Highways at around 6.45am, may prove a frustrating start to the week for many commuters.

14,000 vehicles a day use the M1.

Meanwhile a four vehicle crash caused further delays for Yorkshire drivers this morning.

National Highways Yorkshire said at just after 8am this morning: “One lane (of two) is closed on the A1M northbound in South Yorkshire between J37 (Doncaster) and J38 (South Elmsall) due to a collision involving four vehicles.

“Our Traffic Officers are on scene. There’s just over two and a half miles of congestion on approach.”

They later added: “There’s now six miles of congestion on approach, with queuing traffic back to the M18 (J35).”

Last week also saw the M1 face major delays after a crash between Junction 42, for Lofthouse, and Junction 43, for the M621 interchange to Leeds.

At around 8am, traffic was held after the accident on the northbound carriageway.

The motorway was eventually shut between the two junctions.

All emergency services were in attendance, including National Highways Traffic Officers to help with traffic management.
