Spider season doesn’t usually arrive until early autumn, however, it seems more and more Britons are seeing them in their homes earlier in the year. To help oust spiders, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have shared their hacks for preventing the critters from entering homes on social media groups. Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram.

On one such group, Facebook user Jenna Blethyn asked Mrs Hinch fans: “Can anyone recommend a spider spray that have used and has worked for them?

“We live close to fields and I can’t stand the huge spiders we keep getting in the house!

“I’m so scared of them but it’s been too hot to keep the windows closed! Thanks!”

The post was inundated with more than 100 comments from fellow cleaning enthusiasts.

The most common suggestion was to use peppermint oil.

“Will be doing the same again this year.”

Maria Molloy said: “Peppermint oil on cotton balls in a dish. Leave on window sills spray also with it.”

Peppermint Essential Oil Pure and Natural costs £2.19 from Amazon.

Tisserand Peppermint Organic Essential Oil is £3.50 from Waitrose.

Calmer Solutions Peppermint Essential 100 percent Aromatherapy Oil is just £1.98 from Amazon.

Other common solutions for ousting spiders included using flea bombs, conkers, lavender, olbas and eucalyptus oil.

Katy Louise Light said: “Flea bombs. We do it every six months and it’s great for spiders and stuff.”

Sandra Hoban replied: “Conkers. Make sure you put a pin prick in the conker as they don’t like the oil.”

Emily Elizabeth suggested: “Conkers on your windowsills and corners of your rooms.

“Honestly they work. No idea why or how.”

Sharon Pheby said: “Lavender, I spray lavender around my window sills and use a lavender pillow spray.”

Julie Bateman mentioned: “I leave open bottles of Olbas oil where they come in, worked for me.”

Lou Jeffrey suggested: “Eucalyptus oil.

“Currently have a spider infestation at my back door, and this killed them.

“Flushed with hot water to get them out then applied more oil overnight.

“Did it again the next day to make sure I got all the stragglers and then more oil. So far it’s been a few days and no more crawlers.”
