The first spin-off 1883 provided insight into how John’s ancestors first sought the land.
It told the story of his great, great grandparents James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) who fled poverty in Texas and first acquired the ranch.
The show also introduced their children Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) and John Dutton Senior (Audie Rick).
As for the latest spin-off, the synopsis reads: “1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft.
“All battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade.”
1923 will premiere on Paramount + on Sunday, December 18.
