Daniel Dubois swears twice live on BT Sport and set for injury scan after Kevin Lerena KO

Daniel Dubois is set to go for a scan after suffering suspected knee ligament damage in his astonishing knockout victory over Kevin Lerena. The Brit, who was floored three times in the first round, recorded an explosive knockout at the end of the third to avoid a major scare. Dubois admitted he felt rusty and forced BT Sport to issue an apology after swearing twice in his post-fight interview.

The heavy-hitting WBA regular champion looked to be staring defeat in the face when he was floored three times in the first round. A short right hand from Lerena appeared to do the damage, knocking Duboius off balance and forcing him to take a knee.

The Brit failed to recover and looked unsteady on his feet, being sent to the canvas two more times in the first round. However, he showed the heart of a champion and rallied back, knocking Lerena down before clinically finishing his hurt opponent at the end of the third round.

Following the major scare, Dubois told BT Sport: “It was amazing, he caught me on the top of my head and I think my knee went but I’ve got a heart of a warrior. I thought ‘oh f***’ when it happened. I didn’t feel the shot at the time, it’s one of those things, s*** happens.” BT Sport then had to issue an apology before carrying on with the interview.

Dubois added: “I’m just glad I got the win. I felt a bit rusty, I wasn’t even there in the first round but that woke me up. I was able to land my shots in the end so that was great.

“I was just saying, get back to your boxing and calm it all down. I was looking for shots that weren’t there and I spoke to Shane and he told me to box, move and I had to recover and come back out.

His trainer Shane McGuigan then provided an update on his injury and admitted he could be out for ‘some time’. “You can see his knee is really swollen, we think he’s done the ligaments in his knee. He was really struggling to stand, you can see he had no strength in the back leg. We’re obviously going to have to go and get a scan.”

When asked about how long Dubois could be out of the ring for, McGuigan said: “Normally a ligament takes a quite bit of time but we’ve got a great medical team and we will assess the damage.”

Dubois, who received stick for quitting in his defeat against Joe Joyce back in 2020, received plenty of praise from the likes of David Haye and Lennox Lewis after recovering to claim the victory.

Haye said: “Against Usyk, he has to do something very different. He’s WBA mandatory so he’s in line for Usyk but he has got to do a lot of homework. I don’t know if it was the ankle or the knee that went but I’m just happy he got the win because it shows that he’s got heart. He got some stick when he lost against Joe Joyce, but he showed heart here. He passed the heart test tonight.”

Lewis echoed Haye’s view, adding: “He showed a lot of courage, when the panic aspect came in he found himself in a situation where he didn’t allow panic to overtake him. He was relaxed in his mind and he actually looked better after he got knocked down because he mentally said to himself: ‘Yo, let me get on this job, let me start boxing.'”
