Chelsea boss Graham Potter could axe four stars vs AC Milan as Blues eye crucial win

Chelsea boss Graham Potter surprised fans by making several changes to a winning side before the Blues defeated Wolves 3-0 on Saturday, Raheem Sterling, Reece James, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva all came out of the team as the former Brighton coach showed that he is not afraid to make big decisions to his lineups. He was known for heavily rotating during his time at the Seagulls due to tactical switches, and despite putting three past their opponents on the weekend, could make more changes for the trip to AC Milan. Express Sport looks at the four players that could come out of the team in Italy.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta has started two of the four games Potter has been in charge of, and could make way for James to return to the lineup as the 33-year-old may not be ready to play twice in quick succession.

The England right-back was handed a rare rest against Wolves and it would be unlikely for him to miss out twice in a row, after impressing in an advanced position in the first game between the two sides.

Trevoh Chalobah

A similar case to Azpilicueta’s, where Thiago Silva was handed a rest against the Midlands side and will likely be restored to the starting lineup in what could be a back four alongside Kalidou Koulibaly, who knows the Italian side well after his time at Napoli, or a three with James dropping alongside the two and Ruben Loftus-Cheek moving across to wing-back.

Potter will be hoping to count on the experience of Silva and Koulibaly if they are to go up against former Blue Olivier Giroud, though they will also be wary of the threat posed by Rafael Leao on the left-hand side.

Christian Pulisic

Despite scoring on his second Premier League start of the season on Saturday, Christian Pulisic may yet come out of the team to accommodate Sterling. A victory in Italy will be vital for Potter as his side currently sit second in the group, level on points with their opponents on Tuesday and one behind RB Salzburg.

A win or draw could see the Blues move top of the group in what will be one of Potter’s biggest priorities, as the former Brighton coach is likely to revert to what is seen to be his strongest team having rotated in several players for the victory over Wolves and move closer to the team that defeated Milan 3-0 a week ago.
