A car has ploughed into a crowd at a Christmas market in Congleton, according to a report from Stoke on Trent Live.

Locals said the car was “doing at least 50mph” as it roared down Congleton High Street.

Approximately 800 people were visiting on the day, including families and young children.

Locals described the scene as “absolutely horrendous” and have called emergency services.

Business owner Steven Brown, 58, of Steve Brown Antiques, told Stoke Live he heard tyres screeching and people screaming.

He said a car was “screeching down the High Street” as it was “full of stalls and people”, “hundreds” of whom were milling around the market.

Mr Brown added that people, including an elderly woman, are “very shook up” after they had to jump out of the car’s way.

He said the police have arrived on the scene, but that he and others “don’t really know what’s happening yet”.

Another business owner, Sami Dajani, told Stoke live that his staff had “heard something”.

He described the sound as: “Like a skidding, screeching sound, like somebody putting the brakes on in the car.”

Cheshire police are yet to comment on the incident.
