BT Sport’s coverage of Manchester United’s Europa League tie against Real Sociedad was delayed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The UK’s longest-serving monarch has passed away at the age of 96 having reigned over the country for 70 years.
Sporting matches and events over the coming days are now expected to suspended during the national period of mourning. The BMW PGA Championship confirmed play was suspended for the remainder of Thursday while Premiership Rugby’s opening match of the season between Saracens and Northampton Saints was also postponed.
But United confirmed their scheduled Europa League tie against Real Sociedad would go ahead as planned. A club statement read: “Following direction from the FA and UEFA, tonight’s UEFA Europa League fixture against Real Sociedad will take place as planned at Old Trafford.
“A minute’s silence will be held before kick-off which will allow the teams, match officials and everyone in attendance to pay their respects to Her Majesty, The Queen. Both teams will wear black armbands and the flags at Old Trafford will fly at half-mast as a sign of our utmost respect.”
