Brussels is worried a “radical” new UK prime minister will send relations between the two sides to a new all-time low.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Chancellor Rishi Sunak are battling it out in the Tory leadership contest in the race to become the UK’s next Prime Minister.

One EU diplomat said there was no sign that frontrunner Ms Truss would change her approach in negotiations over the Northern Ireland Protocol.

They told the Observer: “If the UK government follows through with the plan already set out, I think it’s fair to say relations will get worse.”

Another warned the ongoing Tory leadership race was helping only to further “radicalise the candidates”, which would make it increasingly difficult for an agreement to be reached when a new figure occupies 10 Downing Street.
