Emergency services rushed to the scene with four police cars, a rapid response vehicle and ambulance in attendance. Activity has centred around the junction of The Priory Queensway and Corporation Street.
The incident is believed to have happened at about 3pm on Thursday. Witnesses have reported seeing firearm officers.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the incident was near a takeaway although this has not been confirmed by the police.

Transport for West Midlands tweeted: “There is disruption in the city centre due to a @WMPolice closure around Priory Queensway and Old Square.”
It added that buses are on diversion.
